Suspended Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo has claimed that she has received threats designed to force her resignation, despite an ongoing investigation into petitions demanding her removal from office.
She revealed the information at a press conference on Wednesday, June 25, 2025, but did not name people who reportedly made the threats.
"I have also received threats to the effect that if I failed to resign or retire voluntarily, I will be made to suffer some harm or the other," she stated.
Justice Torkornoo also criticised the committee of inquiry investigating the petitions, calling it as politically motivated and aimed at seizing control of the judiciary.
According to her, the entire effort is part of "a political agenda to remove her and control the judiciary," citing broad media criticism as evidence of the motivation behind the petitions.
She expressed worries about how evidence is handled during the hearings, accusing the petitioners' lawyers of exerting undue influence over the material given.
"The proceedings are being carried out as if it were a regular dispute between the petitioners and me.
Their lawyers now chose which parts of the evidence presented by public officials to place on the table. This is also a violation of established committee of inquiry procedures," she said.
