Swedru Secondary School (SWESCO) plans to incorporate Japanese language teaching and learning. The news was made by the school's headmistress, Golda Esi Andam, at the institution's 66th anniversary celebration on Saturday, March 22.
Mrs. Andam's speech emphasized the importance of language acquisition in today's interconnected world and expressed hope that with the right assistance, the Japanese language would soon become reality.
Mrs. Andam addressed dignitaries, staff, students, and alumni at the occasion, emphasizing the school's dedication to providing pupils with broad linguistic skills.
She explained that SWESCO already offers courses in English, French, Fante, and Twi, and that adding Japanese will broaden students' linguistic and cultural experience.
"We need more laboratories. We need both an agricultural laboratory and a language laboratory. We're into English, French, Fanti, and Twi. We'll start with Japanese soon because the new curriculum supports learning other languages if you have the resources."
Mrs. Andam also expressed concern about the school's lack of internet connectivity, which she claimed has had an impact on both teaching and learning.
She regretted that the school's Wi-Fi services had been disrupted as a result of the tower collapse, leaving pupils and teachers without dependable internet connection.
We had Wi-Fi connectivity, but owing to our fallen mast, that service is no longer available, and we need it because this is an institution that offers elective ICT, and many of our students take elective ICT."
