President Mahama has stated that the government is consulting with the Speaker of Parliament to get the anti-LGBT measure submitted in Parliament as a government-sponsored bill rather than a private member-sponsored bill.
The President made the announcement during his Fellowship with the Clergy at the Accra International Conference Centre (AICC) on Friday, February 28, 2025.
President Mahama reaffirmed his Christian views, adding that only two genders exist: man and woman."As a Christian, I believe that there are only two genders: man and woman, and that marriage is between them. I spoke with the Speaker about renewing the expiring Proper Family Values measure as a measure submitted by the government rather than a private member motion.
"I hope that consultation results in a revived genuine Family Values Bill. I think that my leadership should reflect the people I serve, and I hold firm on this belief," the President stated. The Anti-LGBTQI law, which has already expired, was introduced as a Private Members law in Parliament. It passed all reading phases and was adopted by Parliament, awaiting Presidential approval from ex-President Akufo-Addo.
However, the former President did not sign the bill until after he left office, citing a number of Supreme Court challenges filed against it.
The measure in its current form has expired and will need to be reintroduced to Parliament before further action can be taken.
At a meeting with the Catholic Bishops Conference, President Mahama stated, "I do think that we should have a conversation on it again so that all of us, if we decide to move that bill forward, we will move it forward with a consensus and probably should not be a private members bill but a government bill with government backing after consultation with all stakeholders."
