Member of Parliament, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah insists that the Minority will only participate in the National Economic Dialogue if the government reinstates thousands of retrenched public sector employees.
Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, the Member of Parliament for Ofoase Ayirebi, has stated that the Minority Caucus will only participate in the proposed National Economic Dialogue if the government reinstates the thousands of young people who were fired from public sector positions.
His comment comes in response to President John Dramani Mahama's invitation for the Minority to join in the next debate, which aims to examine Ghana's economic condition and reach an agreement on important measures to address the present economic crisis.
The President highlighted that the discussions will center on identifying structural improvements and establishing policy goals to help lead the country's economy in the correct path.
However, speaking on Eyewitness News on Thursday, February 27, 2025, Oppong Nkrumah made it clear that the Minority's involvement is dependent on the government reconsidering its decision to terminate the employment of these young workers.
"We are happy to participate in the National Economic Dialogue if the administration will reinstate the thousands of young people that it has sacked from public sector jobs," he said.
“You don’t get to sack young people from the jobs that they have been rightly employed to, and say that after you had sacked them, and you are home, you are inviting us to a national economic dialogue. Reinstate them, invite us to a national economic dialogue, and we will participate in it,” he added.
The layoff of these individuals has been a conflicting topic, with the Minority fiercely condemning the decision, claiming that it has exacerbated unemployment and economic misery in the country.
As the government moves forward with its economic conversation plan, it remains to be seen whether the Minority's concerns will be addressed in order for them to participate in the debate.
