According to Jean Mensa, the chairman of the Electoral Commission (EC), it is not normal for EC members—including the chairperson and deputies—to attend swearing-in ceremonies unless they are specifically invited.
Jean Mensa explained that the commission was not invited to attend any ministry inaugurations or the swearing-in of President John Dramani Mahama during an Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting on Wednesday, February 26 to assess the 2024 general elections.
Concerns regarding her absence from President Mahama's swearing-in ceremony on January 7, 2025, in Accra's Black Star Square prompted her remarks.
Although I was in the nation, commission members, the chairperson, and deputies are not allowed to attend swearing-ins, according to policy. We have never received an invitation to the swearing-in, so yes, that is also by invitation," she clarified.
She went on to say that, while dignitaries and special guests are normally invited, the EC has constantly declined to attend such occasions.
