The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) reported that the subject results of 4,108 candidates discovered cheating in the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) have been canceled.
The Ghana Examinations Committee approved the cancellations after significant consideration.
According to Graphic Online, the results of 483 candidates who were found to be using mobile phones during the examination were also nullified.
Furthermore, subject results for 781 candidates have been withheld pending further review, while 209 candidates risk losing their full results due to numerous potential offenses.
WAEC also warned 319 schools over alleged collaboration discovered by examiners during script marking.
The Council emphasized that these infractions affect the integrity of the examination and reduce the value of the certificates awarded.
Some candidates accused of collaboration sued WAEC, resulting in a verdict requiring the release of their results. However, WAEC has filed a stay of execution awaiting an appeal, which is set to be heard on February 20, 2025.
The examination body has defended its judgments, claiming that it follows a strict regulatory system reviewed by appropriate bodies.
WAEC has assured stakeholders that it is working hard to resolve all outstanding matters and has set a February 28, 2025 deadline for the full distribution of results.
